Anodization of aluminum is an electrolytic oxidation process in which the surface of aluminum and aluminum alloys is usually converted into an oxide film, which has protective, decorative and other functional properties. The anodization of aluminum from this definition involves only the part of the process that produces the anodized film.


Metal or alloy parts are used as anodes to form oxide films on their surfaces by electrolysis. The metal oxide film changes the surface state and performance, such as surface coloring, improving corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance and hardness, and protecting the metal surface. For example, when aluminum is anodized, the aluminum and its alloy are placed in the corresponding electrolyte (such as sulfuric acid, chromic acid, oxalic acid, etc.) for electrolysis under certain conditions and under the action of impressed current. Anodized aluminum or its alloy oxidizes, forming a thin layer of alumina on the surface, its thickness is 5~30 microns, hard anodized film can reach 25~150 microns. Anodized aluminum or its alloy, improved its hardness and wear resistance, up to 250~ 500kg/square mm, good heat resistance, hard anodized film melting point up to 2320K, excellent insulation, breakdown voltage up to 2000V, enhanced corrosion resistance, in the combustion =0.03NaCl salt fog through thousands of hours without corrosion. The oxide film thin layer has a large number of micro holes, which can absorb various lubricants, suitable for making engine cylinder or other wear resistant parts; The film micropore adsorption capacity can be strongly colored into various beautiful colors. Non-ferrous metals or their alloys (such as aluminum, magnesium and their alloys) can be anodized. This method is widely used in mechanical parts, aircraft and automobile parts, precision instruments and radio equipment, daily necessities and building decoration. [1]


Generally speaking, the anode USES aluminum or aluminum alloy as the anode, while the cathode takes the lead plate, and puts the aluminum and lead plate together in an aqueous solution, which contains sulfuric acid, oxalic acid, chromic acid, etc., for electrolysis, to form an oxidation film on the surface of aluminum and lead plate. The most widespread of these acids is anodization with sulfuric acid.
